Procedure

A solution of 1-ethynyl-2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-1,2,3,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-1-naphthalenol (4.00 g; 17.2 mmol) in o-xylene (60 ml) was treated with [V2O6SiPh2]n, (400 mg) [Tetrahedron Lett. 1976, 17, 2981] and heated at reflux (145° C.). After 17 hours, the rearrangement was completed. The reaction mixture was poured into 5% aqueous NaOH. The product was extracted twice with Et2O and washed successively with H2O and twice with satured aqueous NaCl, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated. Bulb-to-bulb distillation (125° C. (oven temp.)/0.04 mbar) afforded 97% pure (2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-3,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-1-naphthalenyl)acetaldehyde (3.42 g; yield=83%).
