Procedure
If one were to take 2 grams (12 mMole) of commercially available (5-chloro-thiophen-2-yl)-(4-nitro-phenyl)-methanone 1 (Reike Metals, Lincoln, Nebr.) and heat it under anhydrous conditions with an excess of ethylene glycol and catalytic amounts of toluene sulfonic acid in toluene, one would obtain the protected 2-(4-nitro-phenyl)-2-thiophen-2-yl-[1,3]dioxolane (2).
