Procedure

4-Hydroxyindole (500 mg, 3.76 mmol), K2CO3 (1.04 g, 7.51 mmol), and n-nonylbromide (817 mg, 3.94 mmol) was dissolved in acetonitrile (10 mL) and stirred at 25° C. for 10 min in a 250 mL round bottom flask. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 24 h and cooled to 25° C. The reaction mixture filtered to remove insoluble impurities and solvent evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography eluting with 100% hexanes and 30% EtOAc/hexanes to afford 4-nonyloxyindole as pale yellow solid (847 mg, 87%). Rf=0.8 (30% EtOAc/hexanes).
