Procedure

3-Chloro-5-hydroxy-1,2-dimethylpyridin-4(1H)-one (500 mg, 2.80 mmol) was suspended in trifluoroacetaldehyde methyl hemiacetal (3 mL). Potassium carbonate (119 mg, 0.86 mmol) was added and the mixture was heated to 120° C. After 2.5 hours, the reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, then diluted with methanol and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness and diluted with acetone. The solution was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to give 3-chloro-5-hydroxy-1,2-dimethyl-6-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxyethyl)pyridin-4(1H)-one (650 mg) as a pink solid. Yield=85%; 1H-NMR (MeOD-D4, 90 MHz) δ (ppm): 5.9 (q, J=9.1 Hz, 1H), 4.01 (s, 3H) and 2.65 (s, 3H); MS-ESI m/z 272 [M+1]+.
