Procedure
Trifluoroacetic acid (8.3 mL, 108 mmol) was added to a solution of 4-[4-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-thiazol-2-yl]-biphenyl-2,4′-dicarboxylic acid 4′-tert-butyl ester 2-methyl ester (which may be prepared as described for Intermediate 7; 5.8 g, 10.7 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (25 mL) at 0-5° C. The mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stir for 3 h. The resulting solution was concentrated under a stream of nitrogen and then dried under high vacuum to give 4-[4-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-thiazol-2-yl]-biphenyl-2,4′-dicarboxylic acid 2-methyl ester (5.1 g, 98%) as a tan solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ ppm 13.08 (br s, 1H), ppm 8.49 (s, 1H), 8.42 (s, 1H), 8.35 (s, 1H), 8.30 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 8.10 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 1H), 8.02 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 7.77 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 7.66 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 7.49 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 2H).
