To a solution of crude 2-fluoro-4-(2-oxoethyl)benzonitrile (900 mg, 5.5 mmol) in 20 mL of DCM was added N-Boc Piperazine (1.0 g, 5.5 mmol) and NaBH(OAc)3 (4.7 g, 22 mmol), the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction was diluted with DCM, and washed with brine, the organic layer was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by preparative TLC to give tert-butyl 4-[2-(4-cyano-3-fluorophenyl)ethyl]piperazine-1-carboxylate.
