4-Phenylbenzoyl chloride (2.23 g) was added little by little to a chloroform (20 mL) solution of N,N2,O-trimethyl-3-oxoserinamide hydrochloride (Intermediate 5-2, 2.02 g) and triethylamine (2.18 g) under ice cooling, and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at the same temperature and for 1 hour, with the temperature raised to room temperature. Water was added to the reaction mixture, and the system was extracted with chloroform. The extract was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the desiccant was filtered out, whereafter the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by OH type silica gel column chromatography (gradient elution with chloroform/methanol=98/2→90/10) to obtain 4-{[1-methoxy-3-(methylamino)-1,3-dioxopropan-2-yl](methyl)carbamoyl}biphenyl (yellow solid) (3.0 g, 86%).
