To a solution of 1-{3-[(tert-Butoxycarbonyl)amino]propyl}-2-(trimethoxymethyl)-1H-benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid (Intermediate A, 20 g, 68.7 mmol) in methanol (200 mL) is added conc. HCl (5 mL) and the reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The solvent is evaporated to afford the title compound as a solid (20 g, 92%) which is used in the next reaction without purification.
