Procedure
3-Bromophenylacetic acid, 35i-a, (50 g, 0.23 mol) was dissolved in ethanol (250 mL) and sulfuric acid was added drop-wise. The mixture was heated to reflux and stirred overnight. The solution was adjusted to about a pH of 7-8 with sodium hydroxide solution and concentrated in vacuo. The water phase was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×150 mL) and the combined organics was washed with brine (50 mL) and dried, concentrated to give the compound, 35i-b, (52.6 g, 93%) as colorless oil. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.24-1.29 (m, 3H), 3.58 (s, 2H), 4.11-4.19 (m, 2H), 7.18-7.25 (m, 2H), 7.38-7.44 (m, 2H). LC-MS (M+H)+ 243, 245.
