Procedure
To a solution of 4-chloro-1-(2-methylphenyl)-2-oxo-5-phenyl-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile obtained in Step B (255 mg) in ethanol (1.6 mL) was added hydrazine monohydrate (59.7 mg) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was heated at 70° C. for 2 hr, and cooled to room temperature, water was added thereto, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by thin layer silica gel chromatography (methanol/dichloromethane) to give the title compound (67.0 mg).
