Procedure
The 2-(vinyltrityl)-3-aminophenol is dissolved in a 50/50 solution of acetone and 50% H2PO3. The solution is chilled to 0° C. NaNO2 (1.0 g, 2.0 equiv.) is dissolved in water (10 mL) and added at a rate to keep the temperature of the reaction mixture below 5° C. The mixture is stirred for an additional 30 minutes. The product 2-(vinyltrityl)phenol is obtained by filtration and dried under vacuum (yield 35-45%). Product is recrystallized from hot acetic acid.
