Procedure

A mixture of 2-[1-hydroxy-1-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl]thiazole (0.33 g), 2-chloromethylquinoline hydrochloride (0.22 g), potassium carbonate (0.5 g) and dimethylformamlde (5 ml) was stirred at ambient temperature for Z4 hours. The mixture was partitioned between ethyl aceiate and water and the organic layer was separated, washed with a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with chloroform/ethyl acetate (9/1 v/v) to give 2-[1-hydroxy-1-[3-(quinol-2-ylmethoxy)phenyl]-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl]thiazole (0.15 g, 30%), m.p. 177° C.
