Procedure

A mixture of 1.0 g. (2.72 mmole) of the epoxide XXI and 0.103 g. (2.72 mmole) of sodium borohydride in 5 ml. of absolute ethanol was refluxed during 5 minutes. After cooling, the reaction mixture was acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid and then extracted with ether. The aqueous layer was separated and made alkaline by the addition of aqueous ammonia and then extracted with methylene chloride. The resulting extracts were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to yield 800 mg. of an oil (XXII) which was not further purified but used directly in the next transformation. The IR and NMR spectra were consistent with the structure.
