Procedure
A mixture of 20.0 parts of 1-(3-diethylaminopropyl)-3-benzoyl-4-hydroxy-4-phenylpiperidine and 100 parts by volume of 48 percent hydrobromic acid is refluxed for 2.5 hours. After cooling to room temperature, the solvent is removed under reduced pressure and acetone repeatedly added and removed under reduced pressure. The resulting yellow solid is recrystallized from 50:50 methanol-ether and dried at 90°C. for 5 hours to afford 2,3-dihydro-2-(3-diethylaminopropyl)-9-phenyl-1H-indeno[2,1-c]pyridine dihydrobromide containing 11/2 moles of water of hydration per mole. This compound melts at 136°-138°C.
