Procedure

To a solution containing 2.3 g. of sodium in 100 ml. of absolute methanol, there were added 41.8 g. of 1-acetoxy-3,7,10,11-tetramethyl-2,6,10-dodecatriene. The reaction mixture was allowed to stand for 16 hours at room temperature under constant stirring. The reaction mixture was then evaporated under vacuum and poured onto a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution. After this, the reaction mixture was exhaustively extracted with petroleum ether (b.p. 40°-45°). The combined petroleum ether extracts were dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated. Distillation produced 3,7,10,11-tetramethyl-2,6,10-dodecatrien-1-ol, b.p. 92-93°C./0.02 mmHg; nD20 = 1.4947.
