The tetraacetate IV (119 g, 0.226 mole) was added to methanol (1000 ml). The mixture was heated at 60° until the solid dissolved. Triethylamine (25 ml) was then added, and the solution was heated at 60° for an additional two hours. The crude solid product was obtained in several crops by evaporation of the solution, the final crop being taken from a 20 ml volume. The crude material was used in the next reaction without further purification.
