The reactant 2,3-dimethyl-2-aminobutyronitrile hydrochloride was prepared by the following reaction. A solution of 136 grams (g) (2.1 moles) of potassium cyanide in 220 milliliters (ml) of water was added dropwise at 10°-15° C. to a mixture of 172.2 g (2.0 moles) of 3-methyl-2-butanone, 110.2 g (2.1 moles) ammonium chloride, and 300 ml of ether. The mixture was allowed to reach room temperature at which it was stirred overnight.
