Procedure

To a stirred, ice-cold solution of 6.97 g. of 2,2-dimethyl-4-(4-hydroxybutyl)-1,3-dioxolane [Chem. Abstr., 67, 32617f (1967) ] in 40 ml. of pyridine is added 9.2 g. of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride. The mixture is kept at 0°-5° C. overnight, diluted with ice water, and extracted with ether. The extract is washed successively with water, sodium bicarbonate, water, and brine. The extract is dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give a syrup; pmr (CDCl3) δ 2.50 (singlet).
