To a solution of N-(2,2-dimethoxyethyl)-2,6-dimethyl aniline (4.45 g, 0.02 mol), triethylamine (2.76 ml, 0.02 mol) in ethyl-ether (25 ml.), malonic acid methyl ester monochloride (2.1 ml, 0.02 mol) was added dropwise in 15' at 0°-5° C. under stirring. The reaction mixture was then stirred 1 hour at 0° C. and 10 minutes at room temperature, then it was filtered, washed twice with 10 ml of a hydrogen chloride solution (5%), then with water till a neutral pH (3×10 ml). The organic phase was anhydrified on anhydrous Na2SO4 and the solvent was evaporated. The residue (yellow oil) was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column using hexane-ethyl acetate (7:3) as eluent. Thereby 2.1 g of the desired product (oil) were obtained.
