Phenylstearic acid and hydroxyphenylstearic acid were prepared from commercial grade oleic acid which contained a few percent of palmitoleic acid by a Friedel-Crafts reaction using aluminum chloride as the catalyst, and benzene and phenol; respectively, as the arylating agents. Thereafter, phenyloctadecylnitrile was prepared on a continuous nitrile unit over bauxite catalyst at 280°-300°C from 1127 grams phenylstearic acid. A crude yield of 833.5 grams of phenyloctadecylnitrile was obtained. The product was a mixture of isomers, predominately the C8 to C14 and the C17 isomers with lesser proportions of other isomers. Similarly, hydroxyphenyloctadecylnitrile was obtained in 62 percent crude yield from the crude acid.
