Procedure
45 grams of 100% nitric acid were charged to a 100 ml. round bottom, three-neck glass flask fitted with a condenser, thermometer and a magnetic stirring bar. The flask contents were cooled to 10°C. and 27.4 grams of trifluoroacetic anhydride followed by 3 grams of DADN were introduced while maintaining the contents at 10°C. The resulting solution was heated rapidly to 50°C. and maintained at that temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was drowned on ice and worked up in the usual manner. 2.5 grams of crude HMX containing 93% HMX and 7% SEX by NMR analysis were thus obtained, corresponding to 76% of theory yield of HMX.
