Procedure
A mixture of 15 parts of 4',5'-dihydro-4'-hydroxyspiro[estr-5(10)-ene-17,2'(3'H)-furan]-3-one, 79 parts of methanol, 8 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and 5 parts of water is allowed to stand at room temperatures for 2 hours. To the resultant solution is added 600 parts of cold water. The precipitate which forms is filtered off, washed with water, dried in air, and recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 4',5'-dihydro-4'-hydroxyspiro[estr-4-ene-17,2'(3'H)-furan]-3-one melting at 149°-154°.
