In 200 ml. of methanol, 12 g. (0.06 mole) of ethyl 1-methyl-5-nitro-2-imidazolecarboximidate and 4.9 g. (0.066 mole) of acetyl hydrazine are refluxed for 30 hours. The yellow compound is collected, washed with cold methanol and dried to give 12.97 g. of the title compound, melting point 294°C.
