2 a. 5-Methylfurfuryl methyl sulfide was prepared by reacting 5-methylfurfuryl-mercaptan with dimethyl sulfate in alkaline solution according to known methods. 5-Methylfurfuryl-mercaptan was obtained from the corresponding alcohol by the method described in Org. Syn. 35, 67 (1955). The product is a colorless liquid boiling at 71°-72°C./11 mm. Hg.
