Procedure
3,4-Diamino-o-xylene (6.80 g 0.05 mol) and cyanoguanidine (4.20g 0.05 mol) were refluxed together for 2 hours in 5N hydrochloric acid (20 ml). The hot reaction mixture was basified with excess 40% sodium hydroxide and the resulting precipitate filtered, washed with water and dried. Recrystallisation from aqueous ethanol gave 4,5-dimethyl-2-guanidinobenzimidazole (3.89 g, 38%) as pale brown microcrystals m.p. 122°-124°C.
