A mixture of 1,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)pentane of Example 8 (60 g, 0.21 mole), 150 ml of hydrobromic acid (47%) and 200 ml of glacial acetic acid was refluxed for 4.5 hours. It was concentrated to a thick liquid, dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with water, dried over anhydrous magensium sulfate and concentrated to give 53.0 g of a thick oil. NMR and TLC confirmed the structure.
