N-acetoacetyl-L-aspartic acid, 21.7 parts, was slurried with 20 parts by volume of dry acetone and 10.7 parts acetic anhydride. Anhydrous magnesium acetate, 0.20 parts, was dissolved in 2.0 volumes glacial acetic acid and the solution was added to the stirred slurry of N-acetoacetyl-L-aspartic acid. The mixture was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature and the solid was then collected on a filter under nitrogen. The solid was rinsed with dry ethyl acetate and then dried at 0.1 mm to afford 17.3 parts of N-acetoacetyl-L-aspartic anhydride.
