Procedure
8 g of 4-pyridylmethyl 4-nitrophenyl carbonate and 4.82 g of L-phenylalanine were dissolved in 350 ml of acetonitrile/water 1:1, and about 45 ml of 2N NaOH were added to pH 10. The mixture was stirred overnight and was freed from the acetonitrile in vacuo. The aqueous solution was brought to pH 6, washed three times with diethyl ether, subsequently brought to pH 1 and concentrated to give a solid residue. This was dissolved in water and the solution was extracted intensively with ethyl acetate and then brought to pH 2 and the precipitate which had separated out was filtered off with suction. After drying, the precipitate weighed 7.3 g.
