To a mixture of deoxycholic acid (25.0 g) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (8.8 g) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (65 ml) is added methyl iodide (4.8 ml) and the mixture stirred at room temperature for about 4 hours. The mixture is diluted with ethyl acetate and washed four times with water and once with saturated sodium chloride solution. The organic solution is dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product is purified by flash chromatography in 80% ethyl acetate in hexane to give the desired product.
