Procedure

A mixture of 50 g of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, 35.5 ml of hydrazine hydrate and 200 ml of ethanol is refluxed for 8 h. It is concentrated to dryness, taken up with water and extracted with ether. The organic phase is washed with water, dried over MgSO4 and then concentrated. The yellow oil obtained crystallizes slowly to give 50.6 g of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone hydrazone.
