A solution of 2-acetamido-3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-α-D-glucopyranosyl chloride (18.3 g, 50 mmol) in acetone (100 ml) was added to a solution of syringaldehyde (9.1 g, 50 mmol) in 1M potassium hydroxide solution (100 ml). The mixture was then stirred for 18 h and then diluted with water. The precipitated crystalline solid (10.8 g, 42%) was then filtered off, washed well with water and recrystallised from acetone-water water to give the title compound, m.p. 222°-225°, [α]D +3° (c 0.9, CHCl3)
