A mixture of syringaldehyde benzoate (2e)(0.18 g, 0.63 mmol), 1,4-dimethylquinolinium iodide (0.18 g, 0.63 mmol) and ammonium acetate (0.15 g, 1.9 mmol) was dissolved in warm ethanol and heated under reflux. The solution rapidly turned yellow and within 15 min, yellow precipitate formed. The reaction was continued for a further 1 h and then filtered. The collected solid was washed with methanol to give (24e)(0.28 g, 81%) as a fine yellow powder, m.p. decomp.>250° C. (Found: C, 58.86; H, 4.25; N, 2.71. C27H24NO4I calc. C., 58.60; H, 4.37; N, 2.53%).
