Procedure
The reaction was carried out in the same manner as described in Example 1 using p-bromobenzoic acid N-isopropyl-N-cyclohexyl amide (2.904 g, 8.96 mmol), 3,4-methylenedioxyphenol (1.354 g, 9.80 mmol) and cuprous oxide (641 mg, 4.48 mmol) in 2,4,6-collidine (15 ml). After 24 hr of refluxing, the reaction was cooled, diluted with ethyl acetate, and extracted with 0.5N HCl. A precipitate that formed on extraction was filtered and the aqueous filtrate was re-extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were combined and washed three times with 6N HCl, twice with H2O, three times with 5% NaOH, twice with H2O and dried (Na2SO4) The drying agent was removed by filtration, and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo to give the crude product as a black oil. This was chromatographed on silica gel using mixtures of ethyl acetate and hexane as eluents to give the title compound as an oil.
