Procedure
180 g of SOCl2 was added to a suspension of 281 g of 4'-pentylbiphenyl-4-ylacetamide [m.p. 185°; obtained by reaction of 4-acetyl-4'-pentylbiphenyl with morpholine/sulfur and subsequent hydrolysis to give 4'-pentylbiphenyl-4-ylacetic acid (m.p. 160°), reaction with SOCl2 to give the chloride and reaction with NH3 ] in 1 l of toluene at 80°. After stirring at 80° for 6 hours, cooling down and pouring into water, 4'-pentylbiphenyl-4-ylacetonitrile was obtained, m.p. 80°, c.p. -10°.
