Procedure

290 mg of 5-[4-(6-acetoxy-5,7,8-trimethylchroman-2-ylmethoxy)benzyl]-2-iminothiazolidin-4-one (prepared as described in Example 4) were added to a mixture of 3 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid, 1.5 ml of water and 5 ml of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and the mixture was heated under reflux for 3.5 hours. The reaction mixture was then processed and purified as described in Example 1(a), and the crude product, in the form of an oil, was subjected to column chromatography through silica gel. The title compound, melting at 158°-159° C., was obtained from the fractions eluted with a 4:1 by volume mixture of benzene and ethyl acetate.
