To a solution of methyl 3-[3-(4-chlorobenzyl)-6-(quinolin-2-ylmethoxy)indol-2-yl]-2,2-dimethylpropanoate (Step D, Example 37) (208 mg) in dry THF (5 mL) and HMPA (0.5 mL) at -78° C. was added 0.58M potassium hexamethyldisilazane in toluene (0.77 mL) and the solution then stirred at -78° C. for 15 minutes. Then freshly distilled benzenesulfonyl chloride (0.062 mL) was added and stirred at -78° C. for 2.5 hours. The reaction mixture was quenched with 25% aq. NH4OAc, extracted with EtOAc, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to give crude product. Chromatography of the residue in a column of flash silica gel (eluting with EtOAc-hexane 25:75) afforded the title product as an oil.
