A mixture of 5'-(chloromethyl)-2'-hydroxyacetophenone (1.85 g, 10.0 mmol), potassium carbonate (1.38, 10.0 mmol), 2-methoxyethanol (0.9 g, 12.0 mmol) and 10 mL chloroform was stirred 24 hours, filtered, and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo to give a residue. The residue was purified by flash chromatography eluting with 30:70 ethyl acetate:hexane to give 0.40 g (18%) product as an oil.
