3.5 g (19 mmol) of 3,4-dimethyl-2(3H)-thiazolone-(1-methylethylidene)hydrazone from step A in 60 mL of 6M hydrochloric acid was heated at 50° C. for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was then concentrated, and the crude product was recrystallized from ethanol. This gave 2 g (60% of the theoretical) of a pink powder.
