Procedure
para-Fluorophenylpropionic acid (5.15 g, 31.0 mmol, 1 eq.) was dissolved in THF (150 mL). To this solution a 1.0 M solution of borane in THF was added dropwise (caution—exothermic) at 25° C. under N2. The mixture was refluxed overnight. The reaction was quenched with excess 1N HCl and extracted 3 times with EtOAc. The organic layers were dried (MgSO4), and stripped to yield 5.67 g of a pink oil. Evaporative distillation at 0.05 mmHg and 193-260° C. yielded 2.32 g of product as a clear colorless oil.
