A solution of butyronitrile (34.5 g; 0.5 mol) in ethanol (25 g; 0.54 mol) was cooled in an ice bath. The cold solution was then saturated with hydrogen chloride gas. The reaction mixture was refrigerated for 18 hours. The excess ethanol was evaporated under vacuum. The residual oil was then treated with a small amount of diethyl ether. Collection of the colorless solid provided the title compound (23 g, 30% yield) which was used in the reaction described in step 2 of this example. 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6; 200 MHz): δ12.22 (br s, 1H), 11.33 (br s, 1H), 4.46 (q, 2H), 2.62 (t, 2H), 1.65 (m, 2H), 1.32 (t, 3H), and 0.92 ppm (t, 3H).
