Ammonium hydroxide was added to a solution of 2.0 g (7 mmole) 4-[2-(4-formylphenoxy)ethyl]phenyl acetate in methanol. When the starting material was consumed the solvent was evaporated in vacuo. 0.5 M hydrochloric acid was added and the product was extracted with diethyl ether and dichloromethane, dried, filtered and evaporated to give 1.6 g (yield 93%) of 4-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethoxy]benzaldehyde
