Procedure

A mixture of ethyl 7-benzyloxy-4-methyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylate (15.0 g, 485 mmol), ammonium formate (30.6 g, 485 mmol), 10% palladium-carbon (2.00 g) and ethanol (450 ml) was heated under reflux for 0.5 hour. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, after which the insoluble material was filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was crystallized from ethyl acetate/toluene to obtain ethyl 7-hydroxy-4-methyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylate (6.96 g). M.p. 211-212° C.
