Procedure
HCl gas was rapidly bubbled through a suspension of acid 8-3 (4.0 g, 10.81 mmol) in EtOH (50 ml) at 0° C. for 10 minutes. The cooling bath was removed and the reaction was heated to 60° C. After 18 h, the reaction was concentrated to provide ester 8-4 as a white solid.
