5-(3,6-Dimethoxy-9-hydroxyfluoren-9-yl)-2',3',5'-tris-O-((1,1-dimethylethyl)dimethylsilyl)uridine was prepared from 2',3',5'-tris-O-((1,1-dimethylethyl)dimethylsilyl)uridine according to the method of Example 1 step (i) (using 3,6-dimethoxyfluoren-9-one (J. Org. Chem. (1993) 58 (16), 4398-4404) instead of benzophenone) as a pale yellow solid.
