Procedure

The methyl 3-[4-methoxy-3-(2-phenylethoxy)phenyl]-2-methoxycarbonylacrylate (66.50 g) was dissolved in 330 ml of ethyl acetate at 40° C. To the solution, 3.33 g of 5% Pd/C was added to hydrogenate at 40° C. until hydrogen absorption was stopped. 5% Pd/C was separated by filtration through a powder magnesium sulfate plate under reduced pressure. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 66.51 g of crude methyl 3-[4-methoxy-3-(2-phenylethoxy)phenyl]-2-methoxycarbonylpropionate. This crude compound was used in the subsequent step without purification.
