To a solution of ethyl 6-bromomethyl-3-methylquinoline-2-carboxylate (700 mg) in dimethylformamide (7 ml) was added sodium acetate (373 mg) at ambient temperature, and the mixture was stirred for 24 hours at the same temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water, sodium bicarbonate solution and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by preparative thin-layer chromatography (n-hexane:ethyl acetate=1:2, V/V) to give ethyl 6-acetoxymethyl-3-methylquinoline-2-carboxylate (452 mg) as an oil.
