The solution containing the 3-phenyl-2(S)-phthal-imidopropionyl chloride was diluted with 500 ml of toluene and combined with 72.11 g of 1,2-butylene oxide. 23.5 g of palladium on carbon (5%) and 100 ml of toluene were added to the solution. The suspension was hydrogenated for 17 hours with stirring and then filtered and the residue washed with 200 ml of toluene, wherein 3-phenyl-2(S)-phthalimidopropan-1-al was obtained.
