To a solution of 14.0 g. (0.2 mole) of imidazoline in 150 ml. of dry dimethylformamide is added dropwise with cooling 22.9 g. (0.1 mole) of benzyl bromoacetate. When the addition is complete, the reaction is warmed to 50°-60° C. for several hours, and is then cooled and diluted with water (250 ml.). The product is extracted with diethyl ether, and the extracts are combined and washed several times with a saturated brine solution. The ether phase is dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to an oil, which is used in the next reaction without purification.
