Procedure

A mixture of 1.38 parts of ethyl 4-hydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro[1]benzothieno[2,3-b]pyridine-3-carboxylate, 11 parts by volume of 10 % aqueous potassium hydroxide, 44 parts by volume of ethanol and 45 parts by volume of water and 1.5 parts by volume of ethyl iodide is refluxed for 4 hours and the product is isolated in a manner similar to that described in Example 13, whereby 1-ethyl-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-4-oxo[1]benzothieno[2,3-b]pyridine-3-carboxylic acid is obtained as crystals. Recrytallization from ethanol and, then, from tetrahydrofuran gives colorless needles melting at 218°-221°C.
