PROCEDURE

2α,3α-Epoxy-5α-pregn-16-ene-11,20 -dione (250 mg.) in chloroform (10 ml.) was shaken with concentrated hydrochloric acid (8 ml.) for 30 minutes. More chloroform was added, and the organic solution was washed with water, sodium bicarbonate solution and water. It was then dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated to give a colourless oil which was recrystallised from methanol to give title compound (160 mg.) as colourless prisms, m.p. 209°-212° (decomp.), [α]D + 83° , λmax. 234 nm (ε 8,350) (EtOH).
